What do proxies do?

A proxy is like a gateway that work between the computer you’re on and the site you want to go to. The proxy visits the site you want instead of you, loads the page, and sends it on to you. So the site you’re trying to visit never sees your IP. So actually you are visiting sites in an indirect way. Internet filters think you are just visiting the proxy, not the destination site.

Another way to unblock Yahoo Mail in school is by setting up your own web proxy. This is harder than using a proxy but it’s a lot nicer to have because you can make more of them.
