How do proxies work?

A proxy is like a gateway that work between your computer and the site you’re trying to visit. The proxy visits the site instead of you, accesses the page, and forwards it to you. So the site you want to access only sees the proxy’s IP. So in effect you are surfing sites indirectly. School filters think you are just accessing the proxy, not the site you actually want.
