What do proxies do?

A proxy is like a gateway that sit between your computer and the site you’re trying to visit. The proxy visits the site you want on your behalf, downloads the page, and forwards it to you. So the site you want to be on only sees the proxy’s IP. So in effect you are browsing websites in an indirect manner. School filters only think you are accessing the proxy, not the real site.

Another way to unblock YouTube in school is to make your own web proxy. This is more complicated than using a proxy but it pays off because you’re in control.
