How does it work?

A proxy is like a gateway that sit between the computer you’re on and the site you want to go to. The proxy accesses the site on your behalf, accesses the page, and sends it on to you. So the site you want to access only sees the proxy’s IP. So actually you are browsing sites in an indirect manner. School firewalls think you are just accessing the proxy, not the real site.

Another method to unblock YouTube in school is to make your own proxy. This is more advanced than just using a proxy but better in the long run because you can make more of them. You can even earn money from letting people use it by letting people advertise on it.
