What do proxies do?

A proxy is like a gateway that pass information between your computer and the site you’re visiting. The proxy goes to the site you want instead of you, accesses the page, and forwards it to you. So the site you want to access only sees the proxy’s IP. So in effect you are visiting sites in an indirect way. Internet filters think you are just visiting the proxy, not the real site.

Another way of unblocking Yahoo Mail at school is by setting up your own web proxy. This is more advanced than just using a proxy but better in the long run because you can make more of them.
