How does it work?

A proxy is a kind of gateway that work between your computer and the site you’re visiting. The proxy visits the site on your behalf, downloads the page, and forwards it to you. So the site you want to be on only sees the proxy’s IP. So in effect you are visiting sites indirectly. School filters only think you are accessing the proxy, not the site you actually want.

Another way to unblock Yahoo Mail at school is to set up your own web proxy. This is more advanced than using someone else’s proxy but it’s a lot nicer to have because you’re in control.
