How do proxies work?

A proxy is like a gateway that sit between the computer you’re on and the site you want to go to. The proxy visits the site you want on your behalf, accesses the page, and forwards it to you. So the site you’re trying to visit only sees the proxy’s IP. So in effect you are browsing sites indirectly. School firewalls only think you are accessing the proxy, not the destination site.
