What do proxies do?

A proxy is like a gateway that pass information between the computer you’re on and the site you’re trying to visit. The proxy goes to the site in your place, loads the page, and forwards it to you. So the site you want to be on only sees the proxy’s IP. So in effect you are visiting sites in an indirect way. School filters only think you are visiting the proxy, not the destination site.

Another method to unblock sites in school is to make your own proxy. This is more complicated than using a proxy but it pays off because you’re in control.
