How do proxies work?

A proxy is like a gateway that work between the computer you’re on and the site you’re visiting. The proxy visits the site on your behalf, downloads the page, and sends it on to you. So the site you want to access never sees your IP. So in effect you are surfing websites indirectly. School filters only think you are accessing the proxy, not the site you actually want.
